What is Content Rating?

Content ratings are classifications applied to movies, television shows, video games, and other forms of media to indicate the suitability of the content for different age groups. The goal of content ratings is to provide information to viewers about the age appropriateness of the content so that they can make informed decisions about what they or their children watch.

What are the different content ratings?

1. G (General Audience):

This rating is used for content that is suitable for all ages and does not contain any material that parents would find inappropriate.

2. PG (Parental Guidance):

This rating is used for content that contains elements that parents may find inappropriate for younger children, such as mild violence or mild language.

3. PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned):

This rating is used for content that contains elements that parents may find inappropriate for children under 13 years of age, such as moderate violence or strong language.

4. R (Restricted):

This rating is used for content that is not suitable for children under 17 years of age and contains elements such as strong violence, graphic sexuality, or drug use.

5. NC-17 (No Children Under 17 Admitted):

This rating is used for content that is not suitable for children under 17 years of age and contains graphic sexual content or extreme violence.

Why should OTT services rate their content?

Applying content ratings is an important part of the process of providing content to your audience. This ensures that you maintain a transparent, responsible approach to your streaming business.

1. Consumer information:

By applying content ratings, your streaming service provides important information to viewers about the age appropriateness of the content. This helps parents make informed decisions about what their children watch, and also helps adults make decisions about what content they want to watch.

2. Legal requirements:

In some countries, there are laws or regulations that require certain types of content to be rated based on their suitability for different age groups. By rating your content, you can ensure that they are in compliance with these laws and regulations.

3. Responsibility:

By rating your content, you take a responsible approach to your role in providing content to your younger audience. You are demonstrating your commitment to providing information to viewers that help them make well-informed decisions about what they watch, and also taking steps to ensure that the content is appropriate for the audience.

4. Brand Reputation:

Applying content ratings can help you maintain a positive reputation and build brand trust. Consumers are more likely to use and recommend platforms that are transparent about the content they provide and that take steps to ensure that the content is appropriate for the audience.
